The Jolly Christmas Postman is a children's storybook written by Janet and Allan Ahlberg in 1991. It is a follow up to the original storybook 'The Jolly Postman' which was released a few years before in 1986.
The story follows a postman as he delivers a variety of cards and gifts to a range of popular fairy tale characters such as Humpty Dumpty, The Three Bears and Little Red Riding Hood. Like the original storybook, each page features an envelope containing interactive props that accompany the story.
On Christmas Eve, the Jolly Christmas Postman delivers his greetings by bicycle, with “six letters in pockets”, including his get-well jigsaw for broken Humpty-Dumpty. There’s also some deliveries for:
Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy from Oz, The Giant from Jack and the beanstalk, Hansel and Gretel, the Wicked Witch, The Big Bad Wolf, Goldilocks and Cinderella.
The plot of the story is focused around the Jolly Christmas Postman himself, whose mission is to deliver mail to fairytale characters from home-to-home, all across the land. Twelve pages in the book have been made into six actual envelopes, which contain eight different cards and letters. You can slide them out of the envelopes and read them alongside the book!
Younger children will gain much enjoyment from taking out and seeing the cards. Not to mention the familiar characters, rhyming text and humour! Older children will be able to start reading the story and also the letters inside, all on their own.
