Visual Support for Speech Sounds

Our speech cards and speech and language visual support resources aim to help learners with their speech and language skills as well as support them through speech and language therapy.

Speech Cards and Speech and Language Visual Resources:

Explore our range of speech cards and speech visual resources that aim to support children with speech development. Using visual resources is always a fantastic way to engage children with what they are learning because bright colours and images help to draw in a child's attention.

Visual resources can be particularly helpful for Speech and Language support as they can help children to visualise the shapes they need to make with their mouths when making particular sounds.

We hope that our speech cards can be used in this way to support children in your lessons and speech and language therapy sessions.

Examples of Speech Cards:

We have lots of fantastic speech cards for you to use to support your children, but if you are looking for a good place to start, then here are a few that we recommend:

Visual Supports for Speech Sounds Nasals  - These visual speech cards can be used to support children in making nasal speech sounds. Sounds in this pack include /n/, /ng/ and /m/. The cards show the way our mouths move when we make this sound and even feature images of words that use the sound to help children understand how the sounds can be used in conversation.

Visual Support for Vowels  - This set of colourful speech cards for support aim to help children with the articulation of vowel sounds. There are lots of different speech sounds that use vowels including /oo/, /o/ and /air/. Each card also features an image of a word that uses that sound to help contextualise the speech sounds for children.

Th-Ff-V Pronunciation Aids  - Our Th-Ff-V Pronunciation Aids can be used as visual display support or laminated as speech cards on how to say these tricker speech sounds. They could be used as part of speech and language therapy, phonics lessons, or just general display pieces to act as a reminder of how to say the words that feature these speech sounds.

What is Speech and Language Therapy?

Speech and language therapy is support for children who struggle to express themselves and have communication issues. Children who receive speech and language therapy may have speech impairments, fluency disorders like stuttering, receptive disorders as a result of autism, and many more.

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) work with both adults and children and can help people to develop a variety of skills such as speech, language, communication, eating, drinking and swallowing.

Before a person begins speech and language therapy, an SLT will assess the individual client to establish what communication difficulty there are struggling with.

They will then come up with some appropriate forms of therapy to treat their particular problems and try to develop a diagnosis.

Our speech card resources can be used by SLTs in therapy sessions, or by parents and teachers at home to continue supporting a child's needs.
