How to assess children's Letters and Sounds phonics knowledge

Assessing your children's learning doesn't need to come at the end of the session, where all the marking is piled up. You can actually assess them throughout your letters and sounds phonics lessons by following these simple steps:

  1. Introduce children to the topic of the lesson.
  2. Revisit and review which children are confident and those that aren't.
  3. Teach children new graphemes, tricky words or letters and sounds and note down if they make links to what they have learnt previously.
  4. Allow children to practise what they've learnt with somebody else to see if they demonstrate confidence in their knowledge.
  5. Test how well children are able to apply what they have learnt independently.
  6. Assess overall how well children have met the criteria and offer suggestions for improvement.
