Here are some that we've hand-picked for you and think you'll find useful:

  • Chinese Numbers 1-31 with Mandarin Punctuation Display Posters - These display posters are fantastic to hang up inside your classroom. They feature the numbers 1-31, with the Chinese equivalent and pronunciation. Display posters are a great way to encourage children's learning over time, and they're easy to point to and reference when you're teaching your KS1 class Chinese numbers.
  • Mandarin Chinese New Year Animal Cards - These lovely cards features illustrations of each of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. They're a great way to introduce children to the Chinese zodiac and what it means for Chinese culture. You could use them to play a fun game or as part of a display.
  • Mandarin Club Certificates - Does your school have a Mandarin club? Then you can encourage and motivate children to come along with these certificates. You could reward them to children who come along regularly and have made good progress with their learning so far.

Using Chinese teaching resources with KS1

KS1 is a brilliant time to introduce your pupils to new languages. The younger children begin learning a language, the easier it is for them to absorb it. At this age, children will really benefit from using our Mandarin Chinese teaching resources, and it's the first step towards them becoming proficient or even fluent in Mandarin as they get older. For some tips on how to use these resources, try these:

  • You can use Chinese number word cards as flash cards or to play a game. Learning a new language can often be a lot of repetition, so make it fun! You could play snap using the cards, encouraging children to read out the number when they place a card down or when they've won. This helps them to remember the Chinese words for the numbers and gives them a chance to practise their pronunciation as well.
  • Create a Chinese Mandarin display in the classroom or in a communal part of your school. Visuals, such as display banners and posters, can help children learn key things in passing. For example, if you have a display about vocabulary in Chinese, every time children see it, they're more likely to remember something from it in the future.
  • Use the resources to encourage discussion and group working. While working independently when learning a new language is good for development, it can be greatly improved when children work together. They can practise saying the new words they've learnt out loud and listen to what each other is saying. This will help to boost their speaking and listening skills.

Why is learning another language beneficial for children?

Chinese languages, including Mandarin, are the most widely spoken languages in the world. So, by teaching your class this language, you're helping them to communicate with lots of people around the world. Learning languages is a skill that will benefit children throughout their lives. Research has also shown that learning a second language can improve problem-solving, critical-thinking and listening skills, and it can help boost memory and the ability to multitask too. Children who learn a second language have been seen to be more creative and have more mental flexibility.
