Who was Queen Victoria?

Queen Victoria was born on 24th May 1819, and became Britain's longest monarch, as she ruled for 63 years, before her reign was surpassed by Queen Elizabeth II.

Queen Victoria was the only child of Edward, the Duke of Kent. Edward was the fourth son of George III, who ruled from October 1760 to January 1820. Victoria was the fifth in line for the throne behind her father Edward, and his three older brothers. However, as Edward died when Victoria was only 1 year old in 1820, and his brothers George IV, Frederick Duke of York and William IV died with no legitimate children, Victoria inherited the throne in 1837 when she was just 18 years old.

Throughout her life, Queen Victoria kept a diary. These diaries detail every day, every significant event, and every emotion the Queen felt during her reign. On 28 June 1838, the day of her coronation, Queen Victoria wrote:

"...the crowds of people exceeded anything that I'd ever seen ... the millions of loyal subjects who were assembled in every spot to witness the Procession. Their good humour and excessive loyalty was beyond everything, and I really cannot say how proud I feel to be the Queen of such a Nation."

In 1840, Queen Victoria married Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Together, they had 9 children: Victoria, Edward VII, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold, and Beatrice. The volume of children and their partnered marriages with other European royals provided Queen Victoria with the nickname of the "Grandmother of Europe".

Sadly, Queen Victoria's husband passed away in 1861 at the age of 42. From this day onwards, Queen Victoria entered a period of mourning that remained for the rest of her life.
