Twinkl tips to keep children safe from fire:

  • Keep matches and lighters away from children, either out of reach or in a locked cupboard.
  • Don't leave children on their own in rooms where there may be a fire risk.
  • Teach children how to respond if a fire alarm sounds at school or at home. Let them know to leave their belongings and have a safe place to get out to.
  • Practise fire drills as a school regularly so children know where to assemble and how important it is to check everybody has gotten out of the building safely.
  • Use plug guards so children can't stick things into sockets.
  • Never let children play near fires, heaters or cooking appliances such as cookers or hobs.
  • Any portable heaters should be kept in a safe place where they can't be knocked over.
  • At school, ensure there is a procedure for all teachers and children to follow to get out safely.
  • Show children videos about the importance of fire safety.
  • Perhaps you could get a firefighter to come into school and to discuss how to act in a fire.
