Nutrition Primary Resources - Healthy Eating Writing Frames and Worksheets

Encourage your pupils to put their knowledge of healthy eating into action using the worksheets and writing frames below. Take your pick from a range of fun and engaging, teacher-made activities, including fruit and veg page borders, healthy eating diary worksheets, pictograms, acrostic poem templates and much more!

Steps to healthy eating:

  • Using our healthy eating worksheets, we want to encourage you to eat five portions of fruit and veg a day. One portion equals 80g of fresh fruit or veg (that's about a handful of loose veg, in case you're wondering).
  • One-third of your meals should consist of starchy carbohydrates. E.g. rice, potatoes, pasta or bread (whole grain ideally). These foods fill you up and provide you with energy.
  • Make sure you include some dairy or dairy substitutes, like soya milk. But be careful not to overdo the dairy - things like milk and cheese have a high level of saturated fat. High levels of dairy can also be hard to process for humans. Try mixing up your dairy intake with alternative sources of dairy products (such as milk). For instance, you could try Soy, Oat or Coconut milk for a change. These other milk types don't contain as much protein, so make sure you supplement that area of your diet. Always with an additional high source of protein.
  • Protein is crucial for muscle growth. Keep your fridge stocked up with eggs, beans, pulses and lean meat or plant-based mince. Nuts are often a great source of protein as well as vital oils. Walnuts, cashews and almonds are good snacks and go well in salads or stews.
  • Drink plenty of water! When thinking about healthy diets, we place a lot of focus on what we eat. But it's important to remember that drinking 6-8 glasses of water is as good as the healthy food choices we make. Yet, don't go overboard, as drinking excessive amounts of water can also be dangerous. Although it's quite rare).

Help your pupils form healthy eating habits.

Encouraging children to form good dietary habits helps support their growth and development. If you can teach them to eat healthily at an early stage, it's more likely they'll keep those lessons for the future.

Talk to your children about food in a healthy manner:

  • Don't label food as 'good or 'bad.
  • Try and try again. But don't force your children to eat.
  • Get them involved in nutrition. Have your children help in grocery shopping or grow some vegetables if you can.
  • Educate them on healthy living rather than focusing on a healthy weight.
  • Ditch the clean plate club.
  • Be body positive.

Help them improve their health:

  • A balanced breakfast with protein is a perfect start for your children's day.
  • Prioritizing mealtime is a significant part of establishing healthy eating habits.
  • It's also a chance to provide them support and comfort. And to set an example.
  • Find a few alternatives to unhealthy items in your fridge.
  • Go for natural sugars. You can find them in fruits, vegetables, grains, and dairy products.
  • Healthy fats are an essential part of our diet. You can find them in olive oil, avocados, different nuts (i.e. almonds or pecans) and seeds (i.e. pumpkin or sesame).
