Why Do People Send Cards on Valentine's Day?

St Valentine was a 3rd-century Christian bishop, living in Rome. At the time, the city was under the rule of Emperor Claudius II, who declared that it was illegal for Christian couples to marry. St Valentine continued to marry people secretly until he was captured and imprisoned. He was sentenced to death and wrote one last letter, to his jailor's daughter. He signed it 'Your Valentine.' Now, on the 14th February every year, people commemorate his sacrifice by sending notes to people they love and referring to them as 'Valentine.'
