What can I include in my using the library lesson plan?

Discover new ways of teaching children about the library with the range of educational resources above.

The library is a brilliant place to inspire budding bookworms, but making sure everybody knows how to use it properly will help you keep your area neat, tidy and running smoothly. We've put together a selection of learning materials to make creating your using the library lesson plan easy:

  • Rules Display Poster — use as a discussion prompt to talk about what you should and shouldn't do in the library.
  • Choosing a Book — have a look at this poster with your class to teach them how to choose a book that they'll love.
  • Sign-Out Sheet — show children how to fill out this sheet to keep track of where all your books are.
  • Young Librarians Certificate — perfect for assigning library monitors to look after the area.

How can we make our library appealing to children?

As with your classroom, creating displays is a great way to make your library an inviting and stimulating place to be.

One idea is to create an Author of the Month display to familiarise children with writers whose books they want to read again and again. Getting your library monitors to put together a few facts about the author and a list of popular titles is a great way to do this.

Navigating the library is also important. Display signs such as these are perfect for helping children to find their way around. Book labels are also a good idea to help children choose a book more easily.

Why are libraries good for children?

Libraries offer children opportunities to discover, share, learn and have fun. Choosing books gives them an opportunity to explore, find out what they like and don't like and discover new interests. The library offers children a way to expand their horizons beyond home and school. Having a library card also fosters a sense of belonging in either the school or the local community.
